Mysore Palace

Mysore Palace is one of the most famous palaces located in Karnataka. Also popular by the names Maharaja’s Palace and Amba Vilas, this palace is among the largest palaces in India. This is a three storied structure – it has a breadth of 156 feet and length of 245 feet. The original Mysore palace was incidentally burnt in 1897. It was later rebuilt by the 24th Wodeyar Raja in the year 1912. The palace has now been converted into a museum where you can see spectacular carvings and beautiful pieces of art and sculptures, exclusive paintings, royal costumes and rare antiques.


Jaganmohan Palace

Jaganmohan Palace was constructed in the year 1861 by Krishnaraja Wodeyar III. During the initial years this magnificent palace served as home for the Wodeyars, the kings of Mysore until 1912. This is when the Mysore Palace was being rebuilt after it caught fire. Jaganmohan Palace has now been converted into a beautiful art gallery that pulls several visitors. It also serves as a function hall.

Another magnificent palace situated in Karnataka, the Bangalore Palace was constructed in the year 1887. Situated in the heart of Bangalore this palace attracts several tourists. This splendid edifice was constructed by the Maharaja of Mysore, Chamaraja Wodeyar on the model of England’s Windsor Castle. Spread across an area of 800 acres the palace boasts of Tudor style of architecture. It has beautiful interiors with wood carvings, floral motifs and exclusive paintings and historical photos.

Dariya Daulat Baug

Located in Srirangapatna near Mysore, Dariya Daulat Baug is also called the summer palace of Tipu Sultan. He used it as an alternate place to conduct durbars and meet visitors. Mostly made of teakwood, the palace boasts of beautiful interiors. The paintings on the walls are sure to take your breath away. The palace also houses a museum where you will find a great assortment of period furniture, murals, coins and a good amount of historical data. The portrait of Tipu Sultan crafted by a German neoclassical painter Johann Zoffany is another major attraction here.

Lalitha Mahal

Lalitha Mahal, constructed at the orders of Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV in the year 1921, is the second largest palace in the beautiful city of Mysore. It is located near the Chamundi Hills. The structure inspired by London’s St. Paul Cathedral is one of the most impressive edifices in the city. This white colored building was converted into a heritage hotel in the year 1974 and is now owned by the Ashok Group.

Nalknad Palace

Nalknad Palace, also popular by the name Nalkunadu, is located in Karnataka’s Kodagu district. Built between 1792 and 1794, this palace served as the last refuge for Chikka Veerarajendra, the last king of Kodagu. The palace was renovated by INTACH and there are plans to convert a part of it into museum.

Tipu Sultan’s Summer Palace

Tipu Sultan’s Summer Palace, as the name suggests, was the summer residence of Tipu Sultan. Built in the year 1791, this beautiful structure includes several balconies, arches and pillars. It has well designed interiors with beautiful floral motifs and impressive paintings. The palace is being well maintained and still remains intact. Some of the rooms have been transformed into a museum where Tipu Sultan’s achievements, his crown and clothes are on display.

Bellary Fort

Bellary Fort, that was constructed during the Vijyanagara times and still appears as fresh and captivating, is located in Bellary that is spread around two hills. The fort lies on the top of Ballari Gudda. It was constructed by Hanumappa Nayaka but was taken over by Hyder Ali in 1769 after he deafeated the Nayaka ruler. Hyder Ali known for his great taste refurbished the fort seeking help from a skilled French engineer. Bellery Fort encompasses a Kote Anjaneya Temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman. A revered Durgamma temple, located near the fort, has a deity made with the heap of earth. Bellary also encompasses two large ancient mosques.

Kittur Chennamma Fort

This fort is located in Belgaum District’s Kittur town that lies on the Bangalore Pune Highway. It unveils the story of Queen Chennamma who headed the freedom struggle to guard her kingdom from the tyranny of the British rule.

The fort was made of the robust basalt rock however it has almost turned into a ruin now. An ancient telescope is kept inside this fort. This was used by Queen Chennamma to watch the Pole star. The telescope is also not in a good condition.

Bidar Fort

This 15th century fort is located in Bangalore. It is a grand fort constructed with the solid red rock. Although in a state of ruins, the Bidar Fort gives you a glimpse of India’s rich historical past. There is a triple moated wall around the fort and it also has an elaborate battlement and baronial gateway.
You can see the large audience hall, huge pleasure pavilions, large kitchens and royal baths inside the fort.

Gulbarga Fort

The Gulbarga Fort was built by Raja Gulchand. This massive edifice is spread across an area of 38,000 square feet. The structure still remains intact and houses as many as 15 towers and 26 guns that have been kept for public display. These guns had been used during various battles. The Gulbarga Fort also encompasses the Jumma Masjid which is famous for its Persian style of architecture with arched columns and beautiful domes.

Chitradurga Fort

This fort is located at a distance of around 200 km from Bangalore. Built by the Nayakas of Chitradurga, it is a huge stone structure that lies on the hill top in Chitradurga District. Madakari Nayaka used it majorly for defense purpose. Hyder Ali took over this fort after defeating the Nayakas in 1799.

Tipu’s Fort that lies in the heart of Bangalore is a popular tourist spot. The history of this fort dates back to 1537 when it was built with bricks and mud by Kempe Gowda. It was later demolished and rebuilt by Tipu Sultan in the 18th century. The fort encompasses Tipu’s palace constructed in the year 1791. However, you shall only be able to see the remains of the palace once known as the abode of peace. The fort also houses a Ganesha Temple that pulls several devotees to this place.

Manjarabad Fort

Located on National Highway 48, this is yet another fort constructed by Tipu Sultan. This is served as a defense location for him. It is said that Sultan had built a tunnel from the Manjarabad Fort to another fort in Srirangapattana. The fort was mainly used for hiding and as a place of defense. Now in ruins, the fort still attracts tourists.

North Fort, Badami

North Fort Badami is known to be a center of ancient temples. Inside the fort lies a massive cannon that was kept here by Tipu Sultan. The temples located near the Fort have increased its popularity. Four intricately carved cave temples are located nearby. The caves are situated on a low hill and can be reached by the stairs. You may even climb up the hill top to see some rampant of the Chalukya era including some temples. A natural Buddhist temple is also located at this site. The caves are located near the ancient Agatsyateerth pond that dates back to the 5th century. A group of Shiva temples are also located by the pond side.

Belagavi Fort

Belagavi, a culturally rich historical site located in Northern Karnataka, encompasses a beautiful fort built back in 1204 A.D. Situated on the Western Ghats, this fort boasts of its beautiful architecture and style and attracts several tourists.

The Safa Mosque located close by adds to the popularity of the fort. This mosque is engraved with rich calligraphic design. The weather here is pleasant all through the year thereby making the site seeing experience even better.

Mirjan Fort

Located in North Kannada, the Mirjan Fort is known for its architectural brilliance. It is located at a distance of merely 0.5 kilometers from national highway 17. It is also quite close to Gokarna which is famous among the Hindu pilgrims. The fort and the surrounding areas witnessed several battles in the past.

Raichur Fort

Raichur Fort is among the oldest forts in Karnataka. Arabic and Persian inscriptions found here indicate that it was constructed back in the 13th century. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Raichur, a place that boasts of a rich historical past. It has been a part of empires like Vijayanagara, Bahmanis and Hyderabad.  You will find various ancient temples amid the ruins of this fort.

Bangalore may be called the garden city but the most famous garden in the state of Karnataka happens to be the Brindavan Garden located in the Mandaya District. The spectacular garden located at about 19 km from Mysore City Center sees several visitors almost all round the year. The highlights of the park are its beautiful dancing fountains and skilfully laid out terrace gardens decked with pergolas, gazeboz and topiaries. The beauty of the place especially enhances during the night when the fountains are illuminated with colourful lights.

Lumbini Gardens

This is a water amusement park spread over an area of 1.5 km along the Nagavara Lake. It is good place for recreation for kids as well as adults. You can enjoy dry as well as water rides here. Those of you who love boating can go for boat rides. It has beautiful landscaping and is apt for spending quality time with friends and family. The park also has provisions for conducting get-togethers.

General Cariappa Memorial Park

This is another famous park situated in the Garden City. The park spread across an area of around 22 acres was constructed in 1996 in the fond memory of field Marshall K.M. Cariappa. It is an internationally known center for conservation of plants, botanical artwork and extensive study of various species of plants. This beautiful garden is spread across an area of 240 acres and includes as many as 1,853 species of plants. The park was initially funded by Hyder Ali. His son Tipu Sultan worked on developing it further. He imported plants and trees from different parts of the world to add horticulture wealth to this beautiful park.

Sammilan Shetty's Butterfly Park

This is a butterfly conservation park located at the foot of Kanthavara forest in Mangalore’s Belvai village. Spread across an area of 7.35 acres, the park is home for over 100 species of beautiful colourful butterflies. Some of the most stunning butterflies in the world can be found in this park. Light House Hill Garden

Coles Park
